Due to historical and environmental factors, the development of lacquer art in Taiwan has been shaped not only by techniques brought from Fuzhou masters—used in traditional furniture and religious iconography—but also by support from Japan in lacquer tree cultivation and industry development. Notably, during the Japanese colonial period, Mr. Yamanaka Tadasu cultivated many talented individuals. Over time, lacquer art in Taiwan has gradually evolved into a part of daily life and artistic creation, presenting a diverse range of expressions.
This exhibition will showcase the works of Yamanaka Tadasu and his disciples trained in Taiwan during the colonial era, alongside representative pieces by 13 contemporary Taiwanese lacquer artists. By connecting the legacy and influence of Yamanaka Tadasu, the exhibition aims to explore the past, present, and future of Taiwanese lacquer art. It also reflects on the impact of past cultural exchanges and collaborations between Taiwan and Japan, and organizes a review of how these interactions have shaped the subsequent development of lacquer art in Taiwan.
Through this project, we hope to initiate deeper cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries in the field of lacquer craftsmanship, and to enhance Taiwan’s strength and position in the international development of lacquer art and culture. Special thanks to Professor Arisumi Mitamura, Honorary Professor of Tokyo University of the Arts, for his active facilitation and long-term support of Taiwanese lacquer art
