Color field painter Mark Rothko (1903–1970) once said that what he painted was "tragedy, ecstasy, and death." Russian Suprematist artist Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935), in his work Black Square (1915), sought to "reduce everything to nothingness."Taking their gaze on existence as my starting point, I create monochrome paintings using lacquer, depicting drifting light and poetry in darkness. The black of lacquerware carries a sense of purity and meditative Zen. Through deliberate repetition, I layer black lacquer, then polish it again and again to reveal traces of spontaneity—marking the flow of time.Employing the hen-nuri ("changeable coating") technique, subtle layers emerge in nuanced shifts, echoing the perception of void and the presence within emptiness.
