Inspired by Taiwan’s identity as a kingdom of butterflies and its distinction as the island with the highest mountain density in the world, the design of the Marco Polo F183 piano incorporates two creative concepts: first, a forest woven into a path leading forward; second, a wing-shaped arc painted across the center, so that when the lid is opened, it resembles a giant butterfly perched atop the piano.
Executed through traditional lacquer painting techniques, the work employs precious natural materials—raw lacquer and pure gold leaf—to create a luxurious surface painting on the piano’s body. It seeks to merge the elegant, romantic spirit of classical music with the expressive depth of lacquer art, aiming to redefine the cultural value of Taiwanese lacquer craftsmanship.
Special thanks to Chairperson Hsiu-Li Chen for promoting the Taiwan Imagery Painting Competition, which led to the artwork being painted on the original piano panel of the FAZIOLI Marco Polo F183 model—an imported Italian grand piano.
